“Notice to all of our valued customers and friends:
Many of you are may not be aware that a horrendous wildfire called the Mountain View Wildfire swept through our valley on November 17, 2020 destroying over 30,000 acres and over 90 homes in less than 12 hours. It burned through our ranch burning most of the buildings including our home and our daughter, Kerry’s home. Nothing was saved of them. However, my art studio, miraculously did not burn along with 2 garages, a shed and our firewood! Due to the Mountain View Wildfire, my artwork and Lou’s Photography are not available temporarily. We are working to restore water and power, temporary RVs and as soon as we can be fully functioning again, we plan to offer art prints, photographs, and cards. My web page contacts email page is again available for you to contact us. We do have a few things on hand that might be available.
Please call 530-721-7925 or e-mail [email protected] for availability and pricing.
The book listed below is available at this time.
Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Saddle up and ride the winding trails described in this new historical story, Switchback Trails Across the Sierra. In the not so distant past exploration and settlement of this vast mountain range depended on skillful packers and their resilient mules and horses. All transportation and supply needs were contingent on pack and riding animals. These early realities morphed in the commercial recreational pack trips and trial trips that are enjoyed by countless folks who cherish this incredible mountain range.
The geographical scope of the book concerns the central core of this long mountain range that includes National Parks and Forests and designated Wilderness Areas. From Walker Pass on the south to Sonora Pass on the north and on both east and west sides of the mountains, pack stations have provided access for visitors to discover this wonderful fastness.
Many vintage photos throughout the book illustrate pack station and backcountry life in the Sierra. The appendix section of the book gives the history of each area where pack stations have occurred and the pack stations that were and are there.

Happy Trails – Marye and Lou Roeser
Lou Roeser, Western Photography
Growing up in Arizona, Lou Roeser had the opportunity to work on various cattle ranches, and a dude ranch in Montana while a young man attending college. He then packed for the Mammoth Lakes Pack Outfit, a pack outfit in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, and there he found his life work and his home. He met his wife, Marye, there and together they worked at pack stations and then purchased the station where he had first packed and been introduced to the High Sierra. Lou was fascinated by the spectacular country of the eastern Sierra and the western lifestyles flourishing there, always packing a camera with him to record these activities.
As a side line to the Mammoth Lakes Pack Outfit, Sierra Meadows Equestrian Center that he built, and ranching, he soon became involved with the commercial film business. He began supplying horses and mules for Western Films such as How the West Was Won, North to Alaska, Nevada Smith, and providing locations, wagons, sleighs, and wranglers. Through all of these endeavors, his camera was always nearby. Beginning a 25 year history of working with the Marlboro film shoots, plus other companies, he carefully observed and learned from the world class photographers who photographed the scenes and cowboy camps that he had visualized and set-up for them, asked questions, and shot his own views of the action. He wanted to record what his business, Old West Film Outfitters, was accomplishing as well as show what the West was all about.
Lou’s photographs, mostly shot in the Eastern Sierra that he knows so well, record the western life style that is an important part of its unique culture. These photos include scenes of ranch life, mule packing, spring and fall Horse Drives, cattle ranching, winter sleigh rides, a beautiful wilderness of mountains and desert as well as the many commercial films. Through his lens, he continues to capture the folks who live and work in this setting as well as the horses and mules that are a part of their work.
