At long last, my book that I have been working on for years is on the market. We are proud to offer this book named Switchback Trails Across the Sierra: The Story of Commercial Packing in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range of California by Marye Roeser.
Saddle up and ride the winding trails described in this new historical story, Switchback Trails Across the Sierra. In the not so distant past exploration and settlement of this vast mountain range depended on skillful packers and their resilient pack and riding animals. All transportation and supply needs were contingent on pack and riding animals. These early realities morphed into the commercial recreational pack trips and trial trips that are enjoyed by countless folks who cherish this incredible mountain range.
The geographical scope of the book concerns the central core of this long mountain range that includes National Parks and Forests and designated Wilderness Areas. From Walker Pass on the south to Sonora Pass on the north and on both east and west sides of the mountains, pack stations have provided access for visitors to discover this wonderful fastness.
Many vintage photos throughout the book illustrate pack station and backcountry life in the Sierra. The appendix section of the book gives the history of each area where pack stations have occurred and the pack stations that were and are there.
Happy Trails – Marye and Lou Roeser
